When is Amazon Prime Day 2020?

Amazon Prime Day 2020 runs from Tuesday 13th October 2020 at 12am to Wednesday 14th October 2020 at 11:59pm. Prime Day is usually held in July, but was delayed this year because of Covid-19 and the resulting increased demand for online shopping and deliveries.

    Amazon Prime Day 2020

    What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is a kind of flash sale of enormous discounts on the site, with 2020 being its sixth year in existence. At midnight on the 13th October 2020, Amazon started slashing prices on everything from tech to fashion for all Prime customers.

Over 100,000 products are on offer during this time – including some of Amazon’s own-brand products, like Alexa and Kindle – so now’s the time to buy if they’ve been in your ‘saved for later’ for weeks. How much does Amazon Prime cost in the UK?

If you’ve used up your 30-day free trial, an Amazon Prime membership in the UK costs £79 per year, or £7.99 a month. If you’re a student, it’s considerably cheaper at just £39 for the year or £3.99 a month – and you get a six month free trial instead of the regular 30-days.

As well as Prime Day deals, you’ll also get access to Lightning Deals half an hour early, beating the crowds well before they sell out. Access to Amazon Prime Video, Prime Reading and Prime Music is also included.

As well as access to exclusive deals, members are also bumped up to a priority delivery tier with free same-day and one-day delivery options. You can even receive your products in as short a time as one hour – but don’t panic if that’s not ideal. Simply turn on No-Rush Delivery and it’ll push back your delivery to a time that’s more convenient.

Is Amazon Prime Day or Black Friday better?

Prime Day and Black Friday are fairly similar on Amazon, with the site offering mega discounts on both occasions. Other retailers only really celebrate Black Friday, so there will be a much bigger choice for the latter.

That said, Amazon has such a broad choice of products on offer that it’s well worth keeping your eyes on your favourites for a flash deal. If you plan well and do both, you can scatter your money-spending over two months rather than one.

    Amazon Prime Day 2020

What type of deals are on Prime Day?

With literally thousands of deals across Amazon’s broad selection, there are usually two types of bargains: Deals of the Day and Lightning Deals.

    Amazon Flash Deals

Throughout the week small numbers of products that are very rarely on sale will be available at a heavily discounted price. They’re usually only on sale for a matter of hours, so you have to be on it on the day, as they’ll be gone in, err, a flash… Hence the name.

    Amazon Lightning Deals

Amazon often runs Lightning Deals, but on Prime Day they’re rolled out as often as every five minutes. Just to add to the pressure, these deals will come with a little timer and availability bar showing how many are left in stock. Here’s a top tip: if you put a Lightning Deal into your shopping cart, be sure to buy it within 15 minutes! After that, Amazon will automatically eject the item and you’ll have to fight the rest of the crowd for it again.

If you’ve missed out on anything, you can always try your luck by joining a waitlist on a product – in case they restock, or somebody changes their mind about a big purchase.

Do other retailers offer Prime Day deals?

Only Amazon does Amazon Prime Day (the clue is kind of in the name), but other retailers, like John Lewis, have been known to price-match and offer the same deals on selected products during the sales. So it’s definitely worth checking there too in case something on your wish list sells out.

Prime Day is running until 11:59pm tonight (Wednesday), so the time is *now* if you want to get those savings in. Check back here for the best deals as and when they’re released.
